Ometepe Island

The word Ometepe is derived from the Aztec language meaning two mountains and the name could not be more befitting for this island in Lake Nicaragua. This island was formed when two volcanoes, Concepcion and Maderas, rose from the waters of the lake and are now connected by a small isthmus that gives the island an hourglass-shaped when view from high above.

Ometepe is currently one of the destinations admired by both local and international tourists for its nature, hospitality, beautiful landscapes, the two volcanoes, a rich archeological background, relaxing beaches and its numerous natural reserves and forests that enjoy high biodiversity.

For ages, the island has represented a paradisiacal destination. According to stories obtained by historians, indigenous tribes traveled from up north to find a paradise as foreseen in a vision by their prophets; a place formed by two hills which they found at Ometepe while traveling down south. The island consequently transformed into a sanctuary inhabited by a mix of different tribes and cultures – something that is revealed by the immense number of petroglyphs, ceramics, and statues that can be found all throughout the island.

The island is currently inhabited by friendly people who love their territory, dedicated to fishing and high-quality agricultural production which is made possible by the fertile soil. More recently, the ometepinos (inhabitants of Ometepe Island) have started to attend tourists and nowadays the island houses numerous establishments offering lodging, food, tours, and other services that enable tourists from all over the world to visit and explore this paradise.

Below we will explain the principal tourist destination of Ometepe Island:

Ojo de Agua

The water from this natural pool, known under the name of Ojo de Agua, comes directly from the Concepción Volcano. Because it is volcanic water, it is very rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, sulfur, and sodium. All those chemical components have properties that help diminishing fever, muscular pain, stress, some allergies, and some people say that they even help rejuvenate!

Charco Verde Natural Reserve

Continuing the road to Altagracia, you will pass by the natural reserve of Charco Verde located at kilometer 11. The reserve houses a hill, a lagoon separated from the lake by only a narrow strip of land, and spectacular flora and fauna. Furthermore, this area is famous throughout the whole Ometepe for its fascinating myths.

Punta Jesus Maria

Punta Jesus Maria is the most western point of Ometepe. A narrow strip of sand stretches out into Lake Nicaragua, which can reach as far as 1 kilometer into the lake during the dry season. You can walk on this strip of sand, with water splashing in from both the left and the right. During the raining season, however, the water level of the lake rises and this strip of sand can totally disappear.

El Ceibo Museum

The pre-Columbian collection: consisting of about 3,000 pieces, some more than 5,000 years old, which is divided into several exhibition halls organized by themes: Funeral Urns Room, where different types of funeral urns used by the ancestors of the Island of Ometepe are displayed, with a faithful reproduction of a tomb of a Shaman, with the original objects, the bones and a gold piece of the shaman.

Ceramic Room, where a huge collection of ceramics is displayed in chronological order, where you can see perfectly the artistic evolution of the villagers for hundreds of years.Stone Room, where tools, grinding stones, and petroglyphs are displayed.

The total duration of this tour is approx. 13 hours with transportation time, it might take longer if unexpected reasons show up such as weather conditions or some others that are not mentioned above but that affects the itinerary.
