Ruins of Leon Viejo
This trip will start with a visit to the Ruins, founded by Spaniards in 1524 and left by its inhabitants 68 years later, because of tremendous activities of Momotombo Volcano. It has recently been declared by UNESCO “Heritage site of humanity” as a symbol of Spanish conquest.
The Ruins are located in Leon, Nicaragua, offer a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of the region. This historic site is the remnants of the first Spanish settlement in Central America and dates back to the 16th century. Visitors can admire the well-preserved colonial architecture and learn about the cultural mix of indigenous peoples and Spanish settlers. The ruins also provide insight into the daily life and religious practices of the early settlers. With its picturesque setting and historical significance, this Unesco site is a must-visit destination for those interested in learning about Central American history and culture.
After visiting the ruins, we will drive a few blocks to the shore of Lake Managua for beautiful views across the Lake to Momotombo volcano, momotombito Island and much more. Then on the way back to the new city of Leon, we will stop at La Paz Centro town to see the tile and brick factories a typical activity in the area.
After lunch, we continue our tour exploring the new city of Leon which has always been one of the most important cities of Nicaragua, both an economical and cultural perspective and has been the capital city several times.
