Cerro Negro Boarding

If you are an adventurous person who is looking for something different, then volcano boarding is a great opportunity. This is an extreme activity on an active volcano that can be done by using rustic design ski boards, kind of like snowboarding except that we do it on fine volcanic rocks.

First, we need to hike up to the summit of the volcano at 726 meters (Every participant must carry their board and safety gear). The hike begins from the base of the volcano at 300 meters above sea level. With stops along the way, the hike to the top is roughly about 1 hour depending on the pace of the group.

Once on top and after putting your protection gears on, your guide will conduct a briefing on how to handle the board safely to do the volcano boarding. Coming down is surely a whole different experience, it is much easier and fun as it takes 10 minutes or less to get to the bottom, it just depends on your determination and technique.

The steep slopes of this black volcano lack any vegetation. On and around the volcano lies a big layer of volcanic ash and rocks. An eruption in 1999 has left a wide border of black, volcanic material around this volcano and there are two smaller craters right next to the volcano which was recently formed.

For your maximum enjoyment, we recommend starting as early as possible, in order to avoid the intense heat common after 10 am in the morning. This trip takes a maximum of 4 hours and can be carried out in the morning at 8:00 a.m.

Juan Venado Boat Tour

The Natural Reserve Isla Juan Venado is an ideal location for bird lovers. On this tour, you will have the opportunity to observe different kinds of migratory and resident birds as well as other wetland creatures living in a mangrove ecosystem.

This island is a Protected Natural Reserve that comprises an area of tropical dry forest, mangroves, and inland estuary located on the Pacific Ocean just 22 kilometers away from the city of Leon. This refuge doesn’t just provide habitat to hundreds of species of birds but also to crocodiles and other wetland creatures.

The Reserve plays a very important role in the protection of the nearby communities saving them from hurricanes and storms. It remains mostly unexplored, so it is also an important nesting spot for sea turtles like the famous olive ridley turtle.

To explore Juan Venado Island, we will ride a motorboat on calm water being able to see species like iguanas, great egrets, kingfishers, red crabs, and much more. At some point, you will be able to pass across the island on foot at its narrowest part (300M) to enjoy an untouched volcanic sand beach.

On our return to Leon, we visit the so-called lookout point La Peña del Tigre or Tiger Rock. Finally, you will see a couple of beautiful beaches, Las Peñitas and Poneloya, one of them famous for surf events.

The Ecotourism Project Palo de Oro operates in Juan Venado Island Wildlife Refuge, in front of the beach Las Peñitas. It offers lodging and tours on the island, with the objective of maintaining the environmental conservation outline and promoting community participation and development.

This trip takes a maximum of 4 hours and can be carried out in the afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
